Indonesia's Bayan, Australian Co Invest in Coal Upgrading Plant

Indonesia's PT Bayan Resources (JSX:BYAN) has built a factory to improve the quality of clean coal in East Kalimantan in cooperation with Australian energy company Whit Energy Company (ASX:WEC).

The two company has established a joint venture company PT Kaltim Supacoal to run the factory.

Construction of the US$68 million coal upgrading plant the first of its kind in Indonesia with a capacity of 1 million tons of clean coal a year has ben completed.

The factory will upgrade the quality of coal of low calorific value reducing sulfuric and ash content, a company director Jeanny Quantero said.

The capacity of the factory will be increased to 15 million tons a year, Quantero told the newspaper Investor Daily.

Bayan also plans to build a steam powered electric plant with a capacity of nine megawatts in the same location, Quantero added.
