The proceedings relate to White Energy’s 51% owned Indonesian subsidiary company, PT Kaltim Supacoal (“KSC”), which is 49% owned by Bayan. Although PT Bayan has a contract to deliver coal at a much lower price to the JV, it raises the issue as to whether coal upgrading for 4,200kcal coal remains economic in Indonesia. WEC and PT Bayan have agreed to determine how to proceed with the JV by 31 December 2011. Where to now for WEC? WEC has other projects in development, and the issues in Indonesia should not impact them, other than the need for operational data from the Tabang plant. The US options remain viable given the low price of domestic low energy coal. The coal fines applications remain viable given that the input coal is waste with no current economic value. The SA coal deposit is suitable for gasification, domestic coal supply and potentially for upgrading.
